Assignment 2: Smart Appliances for Smart Home (30% Final
Mark)
Background
The smart home concept includes the vision of an interconnected network of home appliances e.g.
washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Smart appliances now include intelligent
algorithms that automate more and more functions of the appliance. Another feature is wireless
connectivity that is now almost prevalent in every new appliance. This allows the user to monitor the
device performance from anywhere in the world. Consider the new technologies that come under the
Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, the use of Cloud based services and monitoring.
Project Brief and Requirements
The smart appliance is part of an embedded system in the smart home concept that MetroCon is
looking to develop. The appliances would include kitchen appliances, furniture, washing or other
devices aimed at assisting people with their daily routine. Your group will need to prepare and submit
an engineering report that contains the following:
i) Review on the market oppurtunities for smart appliances (how big is the market, who are
the major companies, what kinds of appliances are there), the major issues in acceptance
of smart appliances and the benefits of smart appliances to the consumer (not just the
elderly).
ii) A low-level block diagram of your system indicating the major components of the smart
appliance system. Include a discussion describing each component. You are required to
specify the details of the electronics you plan to use e.g. sensor details.
iii) A system flow chart indicating in detail how the system would function. This flow chart
should be accompanied by a section describing how the system functions.
iv) A prototype implementation, using Arduino or Onion as the embedded platform. Only
code developed according to iv) is required to be included. This means you should explain
how the different flow chart stages are translated into code. Remember to include
comments in your code. Steps iii), iv) and v) are your conceptual design.
v) A final group report (no more than 3000 words) of the proposed system is expected at the
end of Week 8.

*A prototype consisting of a breadboard with necessary lights and sensors working to be
demonstrated. This is done by uploading a short video clip with your report. The clip (~1-2
minutes) should explain what the prototype does and show it working.
Additional Information:
Further information will be provided in class. Try and watch the videos suggested in VU collaborate
and read the materials for this project to give you some ideas of where to direct your search for
information, and the challenges that could be faced when developing such smart appliance systems.
The reports are group reports and should be uploaded to VU Collaborate assessment dropbox.
